Chapter Twenty-five
âI have a bad feeling about you going over there,â Alexâs voice echoed into the AirPods hanging from my lobes like earrings.
âWhat do you mean?â I said, tossing underwear into my suitcase.
âJust that youâre going to be there with her. It worries me. Please tell me youâre going to watch it. Donât get yourself wrapped up with her again.â
âAlex. Trust me. Nothing is going to happen. Iâm in a much different place than I was back then. Mary and I actually had our first therapy session, if you can call it that.â
âThatâs good! But that doesnât make me any less anxious.â
âEverything on your end is calm, right? The kids? Mom?â
âI mean, I wouldnât say itâs calm, necessarily. The kids are still struggling. Ben quit football. Harry wonât do his homework. The coaches and teachers are understanding, but it stresses me out, obviously.â
âAre they going to counseling?â
âTheyâre going. I just canât tell if itâs doing any good. And then thereâs Mom.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âShe got scammed a few days ago. On the Internet.â
âNo!â
âIt was a typical case of phishing, and frankly anybody can fall for that. But when she realized itâwhen I realized itâand told her, she broke down. She cried and berated herself. Then a day later, she had no memory of it at all. Which on one hand is good, but on the other hand it could happen again.â
âMaybe you shouldâwe shouldâchildproof her computer.â
âI think we have to.â
âIâm sorry youâre having to deal with that.â
âItâs the least I can do. Iâll never be able to repay you for what youâre doing for me. And the kids.â
âDonât be silly.â
âHow are you feeling about this trip? And Laura?â
âTo tell you the truth, Iâve been deliberately not thinking about it. Itâs weird. It has me stirred up, you know? A lot of feelings I thought were buried for good.â
âIt feels very dangerous. Emotionally.â
âYeah,â I agreed.
âYouâre still sure you have to do this?â
âI am. I will keep one thing separate from the other. I promise.â
âYou donât owe me a promise.â
âI guess Iâm making myself a promise,â I said.
âMake sure you take care of yourself. Thatâs the main thing.â
I finished my packing, double-checking everything. Phone, wallet, passport. I hauled my suitcase downstairs. I heard Maryâs car pull into the garage. Sheâd arranged to get off early so she could take me to the airport.
âHi,â she said, coming into the entry. âLet me get your bag.â
She took it, hoisted it into the car, closed the trunk, hesitating for a moment before coming to my side as I opened the passenger door. I put my purse down on the seat. She pulled me to her, pressing her body to mine, our matching height providing a perfect union of parts. Her kiss was deep and sensuous, lingering and careful.
âPlease come back to me,â she said.
My gaze fixed on hers, I nodded. We said very little on the drive to the airport and our kiss goodbye reflected our uneasy truce.
Lauraâs assistant had booked us at the Sheraton Park Lane near Hyde Park.
